Kay and Roger’s Excellent Adventure

By Kay Cotten

Editor’s note: Kay, our first pilgrim to the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton, is back from her second pilgrimage (with heretic husband Roger) with the report she promised after her first trip:

Finally, at long last I am going to put our wonderful "experience" in writing.

It has been a year since we went to Las Vegas and had our first "experience" at the Hilton where this journey is held. We just got back from our second "experience" on April 20. It was more fun than last year. They have added quite a few things to see and do.

First of all, it is very inexpensive compared to some of the other sights and gambling most people do in Las Vegas ($15 each).

When you first go in, there is a very large museum that has biographies about all of the crews from the first series through Voyager. Also, there are biographies about all of the alien life forms each of them have encountered.

Then there are costumes from different crew members, mostly generic, but some of them are specific. For instance, Beverly Crusher’s lab uniform.

There are models and pictures of each of the ships from the Federation and the alien ships also. Some of the movies are represented here. Videos from the various series and movies are playing all around you. They have added a lot of different samples to the museum.

Next, you start down a tunnel where you will be "captured" by the Klingons and go on a "virtual reality" trip.

You get to see the inside of a turbo-lift and you stand on the bridge of the Enterprise where Commander Riker and Geordi LaForge direct the crew members through their various jobs of getting you back safely to the present time and Las Vegas.

They have improved the trip by adding some Ferengi (in person) to keep you occupied while you are waiting in line.

Supposedly they are Quark and his brother Rom, but I know for a fact that they are not the real ones! (Still fun, though!)

There has been another ride added, but I didn’t go on that one. I get extremely motion sick, and the first ride was enough, especially since we ended up in the front row of the shuttlecraft. If you include this second ride, the price is $20, I believe.

You don’t have to go on these rides if you don’t want to, but the museum itself and the innovative slot machines, various scenes, etc., are worth the $15.

After our trip, we went into Quark’s Bar and Restaurant to have a drink that we both needed!

They have improved the bar also. There were no menus last year, but now they have menus with drinks and food that different crew members have named after them.

Last year, there was only one person in Quark’s, and he was just a regular guy. This year, they have waiters and waitresses that are dressed in Star Fleet uniforms, and the bartenders are also uniformed.

The two Ferengi came into the bar while we were there and were trying to get us to spend more of our "latinum."

The gift shops are much better stocked and there are more of them. I wanted everything I saw in one of them! I had to stop myself, however, as some of the souvenirs are pretty expensive.

Well, Trekkers, here is my account of our "experience." I would recommend it to anyone, even if you are not a Star Trek fan.

Who knows? Maybe you will become one if you take this journey! Especially since they are no longer making Babylon 5. I am still a True Believer, but I do enjoy Babylon 5! I guess that makes me an alien.

Qapla’!
