Sci-fi Studs in Short Supply for Ogling

By Angela "1 of 1" Parchini

I understand how these things can happen. The viewing audience is primarily male, after all.

You all know what I’m talking about. Every couple minutes, we are inundated with another profile shot of that Borg who apparently did not have all of her implants removed.

As I said before, I understand. How else are we going to get a primarily male audience to watch a rather bland show?

I am glad that J. Michael Straczynski never decided that B5 needed to be spiced up with his version of Baywatch in space. He, fortunately, had a well-written show.

That did not stop him from filling his female cast roles with more drop-dead gorgeous women. Look at these shows: all of the women could be in Vogue (with of course the exception of our dearest Janeway). [Editor’s note: hey!]

The men, on the other hand, could use a little sprucing up. If women must be model-types, then why can we not have some nice-looking men in there?

I realize that any plan to get them all in kilts is a little far-fetched, but the women out here need something to drool over.

After all, if the men in the group have several women to make comments about, it is only fair that the women get at least a few targets for our heathenish comments.

This is of course my theory for the vast numbers of comments made by men at the fests, and relatively few made by women.

Who (seriously) is there for us to appreciate since the lovely Jason Carter left us? Why hasn’t Mel Gibson, or Joe Fiennes, or even Eric Stoltz been cast in any B5 or Trek roles? (OK, besides the fact that most shows would not be able to afford Mr. Gibson.)

In closing, I would simply like to say that sci-fi shows need more beautiful men, worthy of awfully sexist comments about body parts. After all, we must keep up with the Seven of Nine commentary.
